<aside> 💡 We’ve compiled this FAQ dedicated to solving your queries regarding open call submissions. We ask that you read this and contact us at [email protected] if your problem can not be addressed by the below. We recommend that you begin your submission well before the deadline to ensure there is enough time to assist you with any issues that may arise.

I don’t understand the open call theme or prompt. Can you assist me?

We would like to highlight that our themes are designed to be open-ended. We encourage your creative interpretation and are happy to consider your work even if you have doubts.

At what size and resolution can I submit video work?

Videos need to be uploaded with a minimum of 1080 px on the long side so that we can share the work on Instagram if selected. The maximum size for a video file submission is 4GB but we suggest that you keep your submission below 300 MB. Videos can be submitted in Full-HD. Video duration is also limited to a sharp 600s playtime. This means a single frame over 600s will prevent the file from submission. We recommend to set the video project timeline to a slightly lower value:

- **hour:minute:second:frame

Can I submit more than five images? / Can I submit twice to one open call?

We understand it can be challenging to select just five images to submit. While the submission platform limits entries to five images per project, you do have options if you’d like to share more. You can create a second Picter account with a different email address and submit a second entry to the same open call, as there’s no rule against submitting twice. Additionally, keep an eye out for more of our opportunities to share your work! If your submission is selected, you may also have the chance to showcase more of your series through our Artist Feature or Blog formats.

I was not able to finish my submission before the deadline. Can I still send in my work?

In order to keep our opportunities fair to all our submitters we are unable to receive work past the expiry of our deadlines. Please note that all of our deadlines are advertised in Central European Time (CET) and we recommend you calculate at which time this is for the timezone you are located in.

I was working on my submission when the date of the deadline changed. When is the deadline?

This means the deadline was extended! In an effort to ensure our opportunities are available to the widest group of community members possible, we extend our deadlines at our discretion. We don’t always extend our deadlines but when we do, the deadline Picter displays is the actual deadline.

I need to make changes to my submission before the deadline. Can you re-open my submission?

Yes! We can re-open and refund your submission before the deadline so you can alter it. To make this request please contact [email protected]. Please be sure to re-submit your entry before the deadline for its consideration.

Why do you ask for my biography, social handles, and CV?

This information is often helpful for our team and curators. We use your biography and social handles in our social media posts for Guest Room and on our website on our ‘Contributors’ page. Your CV can be helpful as we often take your background into consideration when deciding who could benefit most from the support of our 1000 Guest Room Scholarship.

I’m having difficulty writing descriptions for my work.

We can recommend some resources that may assist you in writing a description or Artist Statement including “The Artist’s Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love Lecture Series, Artist’s Statements” By Jackie Battenfield. Though descriptions are always valuable for the selection process, this writing difficulty should not withhold you from submitting. Better apply with images without text than not at all!

I’ve submitted to your open calls. How do I get my work to be a part of the ‘Artist Feature/Artist Blog’ and ‘Article’ sections on your site?

Our Artist Feature section is curated by our Co-Artistic Director from the images selected for Guest Room. It’s an opportunity for community members to show their whole series beyond the images chosen by our guest editors. We don’t accept proposals for this section, however, to be considered it is important to make a strong submission to Guest Room. We look back on selected submissions to each Guest Room and Issue to choose people for Artist Feature/Blog. We recommend providing clear information about your series and a strong portfolio site/CV to increase your chances of being chosen for Artist Feature.

Our Articles section is run by our team and we do accept proposals, from people who have already been featured on our platform, about their new projects. You can reach out to [email protected] with any press releases on your current shows/book releases for a chance to be featured. We can not feature everyone so please be understanding if we can not include your work.
